His colleagues, bound by oath to fulfill his dying wish, made the unprecedented decision to extract his consciousness in its final moments and transplant it into the Aegis Frame, an experimental combat platform originally designed as a weapon of last resort. Awakening in that cold adamantium shell, Marcus discovered that the agony of his incineration had been replaced by something far more profound—clarity, purpose, and the terrible knowledge that he could never return to humanity. He abandoned his old name and identity, becoming Aegis 9, the ninth iteration of what would become humanity's most formidable protector, his fusion-powered heart a beacon of defiance against the encroaching darkness. Though he no longer feels the sun's warmth or tastes the rain, he understands now that consciousness itself is the true measure of life, and his burning mind—housed in an impenetrable shell of adamantium—is more alive than he ever was in fragile flesh.
