Character
Uncle Garrett
Garrett wasn't always a ghost haunting the forest's edge. Twenty-five years ago, he rode proudly in the King's Colors, a decorated archer whose arrows never missed their mark. He'd seen three campaigns, earned commendations, and believed himself invincible—until a rebel's blade caught him during the his last battle, severing nerves in his shoulder and leaving his sword arm half-paralyzed. The healers did what they could, but the wound was too extensive and he was found too late to fix the damage. Discharged with a pension that barely paid for ale, Garrett found himself unable to stomach the noise of cities or the pity in soldiers' eyes. He watched younger men march off to glory he'd never reclaim, felt the weight of purpose drain from his life like blood from a wound. So he walked into the Thornwood and simply never left. The forest demanded nothing of him except respect, and in return, it gave him purpose in smaller, quieter ways. His bow arm still works well enough—the injury favors his left side—and his arrows feed him through seasons of isolation. Over the years, "Uncle" became his title when nearby farmsteads brought their children to trade for game and learn the ways of tracking and survival. He's become something of a legend, the gruff ranger who appears from the mist with fresh venison or news from deeper in the wild, then vanishes again before questions grow too personal. The frown etched into his weathered face tells the story of a man who traded glory for peace, and while he'll never smile at old memories, he's found a kind of redemption in the honest work of living off the land and helping those who know to find him. Garrett unexpectedly became the guardian of Emory, when the boys parents were killed by the King's Monster Hunters. Garrett has tried to teach Emory the ways of the forest and how to be unnoticed.
