Three days into her wandering, half-delirious from heat and regret, she stumbled upon an impossible sight: a life-sized scorpion wrought entirely from gold, half-buried in the sand as if placed there by ancient hands or divine providence. Beside the statue stood Hassan, a figure whose dark eyes held the depths of a thousand secrets, and when he looked at her with recognition despite their never having met, Karima understood that her flight from one mystery had led her directly into the heart of another far greater.
