Biography

Karima grew up caught between two worlds—her brother Raz had pledged his blade to Jarl Hjon Nickloasson in the frozen reaches of Yodenfell, while her childhood companion Ahmed rose through the ranks of Mahendra's court in their homeland of Ghaya, yet his letters home grew cryptic and his rare visits filled with nervous glances and hushed conversations that made her blood run cold. Unable to bear the weight of whatever secrets Ahmed carried, and desperate to escape the suffocating silence that had consumed her household since Raz's departure, Karima abandoned her family's modest dwelling and ventured into the merciless desert, hoping the vast emptiness might swallow her questions whole. Three days into her wandering, half-delirious from heat and regret, she stumbled upon an impossible sight: a life-sized scorpion wrought entirely from gold, half-buried in the sand as if placed there by ancient hands or divine providence. Beside the statue stood Hassan, a figure whose dark eyes held the depths of a thousand secrets, and when he looked at her with recognition despite their never having met, Karima understood that her flight from one mystery had led her directly into the heart of another far greater. In that moment, as Hassan extended his hand and spoke her name as though he had been waiting for her all along, Karima realized that her brother's service, Ahmed's betrayals, and her own desperate escape were merely threads in a tapestry she was only now beginning to perceive.
