Character
Dreadwood Wendigo
Once a proud ranger who roamed the Dreadwood Hollows centuries ago, the man who would become the Dreadwood Wendigo made a fateful pact with an ancient forest spirit to gain dominion over the three treacherous peaks, seeking to protect his dying village from starvation. The spirit granted him his wish, but at a terrible cost—his body began to transform into something neither living nor dead, his limbs stretching and hardening into gnarled wood while his skull fused with that of an ancient elk he'd hunted in his final moments of humanity. Over generations, his consciousness fractured between man and beast, hunter and hunted, until only hunger remained, a gnawing emptiness that no amount of flesh could satisfy. Now he stalks the archipelago of mountains as a phantom of the forest itself, his form indistinguishable from the dead timber that surrounds him, luring travelers with the haunting calls of elk and the snuffling breath of something impossibly large. Villages learned to dread the darkening of their hearth fires, for it signaled his approach through the woods—a slow, methodical hunt that always ends the same way. The ranger's original purpose to save his people has long been forgotten, replaced by an eternal curse that transforms him into the very nightmare he once sought to prevent, forever bound to the Dreadwood Hollows as its most terrible guardian and executioner.
