The King Of Hearts

Once a lighthearted merchant's son from the borderlands of Wonderland, the King Of Hearts rose to nobility through his genuine warmth and ability to unite fractious communities with festivals and feasts that celebrated life itself. His ascension to the throne seemed destiny—a ruler who laughed freely and governed with compassion, whose greatest concern was ensuring every subject had enough bread and joy to sustain them. But when he married the Queen of Hearts, a woman of terrible beauty and iron will, he discovered too late that her vision for Wonderland involved order purchased through fear and obedience enforced by the executioner's axe. Trapped between his oath to support her reign and his anguished conscience witnessing her cruelty unfold, he found solace in the only rebellion available to him: consuming vast quantities of tarts, wine, and delicacies until his once-nimble frame grew heavy with the weight of his silent protest. His loyalty to both his wife and his suffering people became an impossible geometry, and so he learned to swallow his words along with his food, each meal a prayer that somehow, through his steadfast presence and hidden goodness, he might one day guide Wonderland back toward the light he once brought to it. Though his advisors whisper that the merry king is gone, replaced by an anxious glutton, those who look closely see his eyes still hold the desperate hope of a man trying to save a kingdom from within a gilded cage of his own making.
