When the Great Chasm was breached, unleashing a horde of dark spirits and vile creatures from below, the people of Durin's Depth faced imminent destruction. In a desperate act of heroism, a militia of men and women, including the remaining guards, warriors, and even the Shrouded priesthood, united to hold back the chaos and ensure the safe escape of the innocent. Moved by their courage and self-sacrifice, the Deep Delver, the God of the Deep Gnomes, cast down his divine shield, Shadowguard, to empower the assembled army. This armament had the ability to increase in size, from a simple buckler to a towering shield the size of a mountain, giving the defenders the power they needed to hold the line and force the threats back into the dark depths below. Thanks to Shadowguard, Durin's Depth has been able to keep most of the dangers from the Chasm at bay, acting as a stalwart wall to prevent the entrance from being fully opened. In recognition of this heroic stand, the assembled warriors named themselves the Twilight Brigade, declaring that even in the darkest of times, the light of their god shall lead their way to victory.
