Stephanie Law grew up in the shadow of the Ashvale Mountains, where her father served as a stable master for the provincial military until a dragon raid claimed his life when she was twelve years old. Rather than flee from that trauma, she became obsessed with the very creatures that destroyed her family, spending her adolescence studying dragon behavior in secret, convinced that understanding them was the only way to honor her father's memory and prevent others from suffering similar losses. When she finally earned her acceptance to the elite Academy of Aerial Combat, her motivation was pure—or so she believed—until Battalion Commander Nick Campton's commanding presence and piercing gaze during her first orientation made her question whether vengeance or something far more personal had become her true driving force. The brutal reality of cadet training quickly revealed that her solitary nature and tendency toward introspection made her a liability in the team-based drills that separated the exceptional from the merely ambitious, while simultaneously, her fellow cadets recognized her distraction around the Commander as an exploitable weakness. Now caught between her desire to prove herself worthy of dragon-bonding and the constant threat of sabotage from competitors who would gladly see her washed out—or worse—Stephanie must confront whether her father's ghost or her own heart poses the greater danger to her survival at the Academy.
